Take A Breath of Fresh Air on the 3rd Green Chain Walking Festival!
Do you want to make the most of being in the fresh air before winter approaches? Then look out for this year’s Green Chain Walking Festival taking place across the boroughs of Lewisham, Greenwich, Bexley, and Bromley. Funded by Seltrans and the partner boroughs, the festival takes place from Saturday 15 September, with a launch at the 400-year old Charlton House at 12.30, through to Sunday 23 September, when the Festival ends with a pub walk around Chislehurst.
The nine-day festival sets out to raise the profile of the Green Chain locally and regionally as a valuable recreational asset. It also aims to promote its importance as a place for walking and recreation, whether for leisure, pleasure, health, transport or just for fun! This year we have over 70 festival events that are suitable for everyone no matter what age or how fit you are, and most are free.
Highlights of this year’s programme include a 21-mile walk from Crystal Palace to Erith to celebrate the 30th birthday of the Green Chain, walks through Sydenham Hill Woods to highlight the extension of the Green Chain through Lewisham into Southwark, an evening stroll around Crossness Nature Reserve in Thamesmead, and guided tours around Chislehurst and Plumstead Commons.
The Green Chain runs from Crystal Palace in the west to Erith in the east, and from the Thames Barrier south to Chislehurst. It has 40 miles of signposted footpaths linking 300 open spaces, including meadows, parks and ancient woodlands.
