Seltrans run a variety of events and campaigns throughout
the year to raise awareness of the benefits of sustainable transport
such as walking, cycling, using public transport or car sharing.
Traffic
congestion, and the vehicle emissions that result from it, can have a
negative effect on the health, wealth and
well being of all of those people living, working or learning in London.
The aim of these campaigns is to publicise and promote the wide and diverse
range of travel and transport options that are available to the people
of South East London, and the benefits that they can receive by taking
advantage of one of these options.
As part of this strategy, Seltrans
aim to persuade organisations from all sectors of the community to support
and take advantage
of these campaigns in
the most active ways possible. One of the ways that businesses can
participate is through the adoption of a Travel Plan. A travel plan is
a package
of measures tailored to individual sites and involves developing initiatives
and targets that will enable your organisation to reduce the negative
impact of travel on the environment.
Bike Week
Bike Week is the UK's only annual promotion of all kinds of cycling, a nationally co-ordinated PR campaign based around an interactive website www.bikeweek.org.uk where potential participants can search for cycling events taking place all over the country. Bike Week supports the National Cycling Strategy, which aims to increase the use of cycles for all types of journeys, and has a target to quadruple the number of trips made by bike by 2012 based on 1996 levels.
One third of all journeys in London are now taken by car and congestion causes the average London car commuter to spend 20% of that journey stationary. There are many schemes in operation across London that attempt to cut down on the amount of car journeys, not least the Central London Congestion Charge. The majority of the Seltrans region falls outside of this zone; therefore other, convincing, campaigns must be inaugurated. The aim of the ‘YQ?' campaign is to reach this ‘car commuting' audience and inform them of the transport choices that are already available to them, such as walking, cycling, car sharing or public transport.
‘YQ?' is a series of banners that are attached to lamp columns at ‘queue' points on strategic roads spread across the seven Seltrans boroughs. These banners are positioned in groups of three, with different messages on each lamp column. The first is simply ‘YQ?', to attract attention; the second carries a sustainable transport message such as ‘Give a lift' or ‘Ever tried walking?'; the third and final banner directs the public to a website, which carries more information on the subject in general.
